Peter Short Artist Biography
I trained as City and Guilds mechanical engineer from leaving school in 1978 then continued to HNC level while working full time in the automotive industry. Since 1984 I have worked in product development within the motor industry, exclusively on equipment for disabled drivers - making cars driveable and accessible for people with disabilities. In my role as development engineer I have used a wide range of engineering practices and processes, some of which I have used to produce my sculptures.
I have been sculpting for 2 years now. Each piece is formed from sometimes hundreds of individually sculpted steel blocks - each one cut, cleaned, then Tig welded together to produce the sculpture. As each block is cut and formed they produce a very individual shape - no two are identical leading to a rustic wall effect. Each sculpture is sand blasted, heat treated then dipped in oil, brushed back to produce the unique patina and finally each one is lacquered.
I have a love for the outdoors - walking, hiking, climbing and wild swimming. These sculptures are inspired by the many buildings and byways I see around. I enjoy the process of producing each one. Although I have an idea of what I want to make at the start of each sculpture … Pathway… Wall… Building… Scene…the sculpture evolves as I make it and the end result will be determined by the sculpture itself. When do I stop? When it feels finished. As I approach retirement this work is a way for me to continue to be creative.
