About Edward Stamp RI
Born in London in 1939, Edward Stamp was evacuated during the war to a small farm in Dunton, Buckinghamshire. This quietly beautiful corner of England made an impression on him that was to dictate much of his later work as a landscape painter. His youthful talent for drawing took him to Northampton School of Art, where he gained the National Diploma of Design in 1961. Whilst employed as a tractor driver, he painted and sketched the land he worked, happily combining the life of farming with that of an artist until 1970. An increasing appreciation of his work at a number of One Man Exhibitions in the provinces caused him to devote more of his time to painting, and in 1973 his work first shown in London with such success that fine art became his full time occupation.
Edward's paintings, both in oil and watercolour, faithfully represent the landscape around him in his adopted Buckinghamshire. Farms and barns, the fields and hedgerows are all captured in his inimitable style. In 1980 he was awarded the Bronze Medal for the most outstanding watercolour by a non-member in the annual exhibition of the RI, and was subsequently elected a member in the same year. In 1981 his wood engravings merited his election as a member of the Royal Institute of Painter Etchers and Engravers. Edward is now one of the leading painters of his generation. His work has been published in cards, calendars and print form and his originals are in collections both public and private worldwide.
